It is located in the Chelsea district of central London, adjacent to the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the home of the "Chelsea Pensioners". The museum tells the story of the British Army from the time of the Battle of Agincourt to the early 21st century. Admission is free. There are five permanent galleries, which are arranged chronologically:
The museum also stages temporary exhibitions on more specific subjects. In February 2005, the current exhibition is "A Most Desperate Undertaking:The British Army in the Crimea 1854-1856". There are many other museums in the United Kingdom which cover aspects of army history. Regimental museums can be found all over the country. Two well known army related museums in London are the Imperial War Museum, which is the United Kingdom's main museum of 20th century warfare, including World War I and World War II, and Firepower - The Royal Artillery Museum.
